Williams Intermediate School
2012 Summer Reading Project for Incoming Fifth Graders
Rather than limiting summer reading to a chosen few, the Williams fifth-grade language arts teachers have decided to give you more freedom of choice. Your choice, however, must meet certain criteria.
Fiction:
At least 100 pages No graphic books (comic-book style)
No diary-formatted books No books with more illustrations than words
No books already read in 4th grade
Nonfiction/Biography:
At least 65 pages No graphic books (comic-book style)
No poetry No story collections
No fairy tales
The project will be a two- to three-minute oral presentation or “book talk,” following the “Book in a Bag” format. Design and decorate a small lunch-sized paper bag and fill it with 5 “props” related to your book. (Examples: baseball, whistle, toy car, etc.) The items should be small enough to fit in the bag. You may find things around the house or create objects that are three-dimensional (not flat) from everyday materials. No more than one of your props may be a picture. The outside of the bag should include the title, the author, and your name. For the oral presentation, you will pull out each prop and explain its significance to the story. You will be expected to tell about the main purpose or idea behind the book without giving away key information or endings.
Freedom of choice should make it much easier to find the books you want to read. The list on the back of this paper is filled with suggestions, not limitations. Choose what you want to read, but be sure to meet the criteria listed above. You only have to read ONE book. There will be books that meet the criteria displayed and sold at the Williams Library Book Fair from April 30-May 7. Also, be aware that books can easily be found at the local thrift store to insure that you have a copy of the book when you make your presentation. You may check books out from the public or school library before the presentation, but you may be limited by availability if you don’t have your own copy. Presentations will begin the week of August 20, 2012, so you have plenty of time to work out your presentation.
Happy Summer Reading!!!
